Kanayamadani is a tributary valley of the Omi River in Itoigawa, Niigata, Japan, known for its beautiful green and black jadeite. This piece has a slender, elongated freeform shape, with a narrower upper section and a gently widening base. Its subtly asymmetrical outline and rounded contours give it an individual, organic character. The jadeite has been polished to make the most of the stone’s existing shape, creating a distinctive silhouette with simple lines and subtle irregularities. Some traces of the original cutting remain visible on parts of the surface. In everyday light, the stone displays a beautiful green color with soft mint tones and delicate lighter variations. Its generous thickness adds depth to the color and gives the slender form a pleasing sense of substance. The jadeite in this series displays an exceptionally beautiful green under transmitted light. Jadeite objects from many ancient Japanese archaeological sites are believed to have originated from this region. Jadeite is a sodium-aluminum silicate mineral belonging to the pyroxene group. Its interlocking crystal structure contributes to its toughness and allows it to take a beautiful polish. Itoigawa jadeite occurs in a variety of colors, including white, gray, green, blue, black, and lavender. Natural mineral composition and inclusions create distinctive variations in color and pattern.
